18 Days of Sober Takeaways: Day 11

It Was Never About You

Getting sober eventually forced me to look at addiction from the other side. Through the eyes of others, that is.

People who love someone with an addiction live with the consequences too.

They worry, monitor, explain, cover, confront - and sometimes try to control the person they love because they don't know what else to do.

I know something about that now.

I’ve been in relationships where someone else's choices affected me deeply, and I wanted them to make different ones.

It was easy to confuse loving someone with feeling responsible for what they did.

Learning where my responsibility ended was a challenge. I had to accept that I could care deeply about someone and still be unable to make their choices for them.

That acceptance has become part of my recovery too.

Can a ‘higher power’ help with addiction recovery?

I’ll talk on that tomorrow - Day 12 in my 18 Days of Sober Takeaways from #NationalSoberDay to #SoberOctober.
